Yep, looks even more like a Hydrangea - pronounced veins and a slight serrated edge on the leaves. Hurrah!

And of course, the beauty of the Hydrangea is that it will indicate the soil acidity when it flowers, like litmus paper. I'd guess at blue with all the sand about but I might be wrong...

I can send you a pic of the leaves on our definite Hydrangea if you want to compare and reach your own conclusion.

So what do I win for the identification...?

be patient and wait. in the next six weeks or so you should get some sign of life and possibly even leaves to help.
The second is probably a hebes common near the sea!
it will reward you with beautiful flowers, shape and leaves of glorious green by the summer.
Take care ot involve your readers in this way I think lots of us can assist.

1. Well, the top one looks a bit like the Hydrangea in our garden, though a little bushier and further toward spring shoots than ours at the moment. It also seems a little confused with a background of long grass growing through? I think leaves might help a more definite identification ;-)

2. The bottom one looks healthy and that's about as much help as I can be with that one!

I like this game. Any more mystery plants?

Yes - it's not much but has suffered a long neglect. The trees were cut back just before Christmas, so some of the little cylinders are neatly cut up logs. There's also some half finished work to the fence and next door's drains which sort-of explains the rest of the mess. I still need to get to the bottom of whether or not somebody's coming back to finish the job!
